Sotheby’s New York, “Contemporary Art Evening Auction.” Oliver Barker, Executive Vice President and Chairman at Sotheby’s, leans into Richard Diebenkorn’s Ocean Park #41, creating a sense of urgency that brings the bidding up to a price realized at $8,986,000. Even though the painting was created in 1971 while Diebenkorn was living in Santa Monica, his contributions to the San Francisco Bay Area abstract movement in the 1950s are immensely important.
